The former commander of British forces in Afghanistan has criticised the government's reservists recruitment drive as creating "a part-time army" as it cuts the number of regular soldiers. The Ministry of Defence is investing £1.8 billion to boost their numbers by 11,000 by 2020. Former Royal Anglian commander Col Richard Kemp said a part-time, civilianised army would not be able to function in the same way as an army of regulars.
